I met with photo curator George Slade today, formerly of the Minnesota Center of Photography which sadly closed its doors this month, and our discussion made me think again about this Red Wing project and how it fits into a greater body of work.

I’ve always imagined this project to be part one of a three-part series. Part two is Sandy’s Deli. And part three, at least in my mind, is a portrait project about my parents as they are today.

I never planned on spending so much time working on these kinds of personal investigations. But what motivates me is the knowledge that these photographic projects create a family archive.

When my father-in-law died last year, he left a manuscript that recounted stories of his life from birth to early adulthood. He dedicated this journal to his future grandchildren, so they could have a sense of who their grandfather was. These kinds of efforts reach out through time and connect us.

So here it is, my interview with the RE and it’s above the fold, folks.

Today I did two things that I haven’t done in a real long while (related to my artist talk at the noontime Kiwanis):

First I sang along to “America the Beautiful” and then I said the Pledge of Allegiance. When is the last time you did either of those two things? The words just spilled out of me, having been ingrained into my psyche years ago.

The talk went well, and most importantly, I received this commemorative Red Wing pin – yay!
